May 4, 2021: Firefighters' Day

WHEREAS, International Firefighters' Day is observed every year on May 4th to honor firefighters who have dedicated their lives to the protection of life and property; and,

WHEREAS, we must recognize the selfless years working in an industry that risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter's life and the physical and mental tolls a firefighter accepts; and,

WHEREAS, we thank current firefighters for their dedication to protecting the public; and,

WHEREAS, we should also remember past firefighters who have died in the line of duty serving their communities or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all; and,

WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, firefighters have served on the frontlines to continue to protect the safety and well-being of Michiganders; and,

WHEREAS, during this day, we should recognize and show gratitude to firefighters in Michigan for their bravery and sacrifice in protecting our homes, properties, and the lives of those we love;

THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, as Governor of Michigan, declare May 4, 2021 as Firefighters' Day in Michigan.
