I let my auto insurance lapse. Will I be charged a fine or pay an increased premium for not having auto insurance when I sign up for insurance again?
Under Michigan's old auto insurance law, insurers could charge a penalty to people who had gone without auto insurance for a period of time. Under Michigan's new auto insurance law, auto insurers cannot limit coverage, charge a reinstatement fee, or increase the premium for an eligible driver solely due to a lapse in coverage if the driver applies for insurance with a licensed insurance agent or company before January 1, 2022.
Contact an insurance agent or company today, and be sure to shop around to make sure you get the best rate. For more information about the new auto insurance law, tips for shopping for insurance, or to file a complaint, visit Michigan.gov/AutoInsurance or call the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 833-ASK-DIFS (833-275-3437).
