Inside the Special Operations Division

  • To obtain the assistance of one of these specialized units, requests can be routed through any Michigan State Police Post, Regional Communication Center or Operations Unit at 517-241-8000.

  • Aviation Unit

    The Aviation Unit provides essential aviation support to all Michigan law enforcement agencies and to the citizen community at large.

  • Bomb Squad

    The Bomb Squad consists of 15 members assigned to seven regional teams. These teams respond statewide to suspected explosive devices and Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD) incidents.

  • Canine Unit

    The Canine Unit has a long and distinguished history that dates back to 1960 when Tpr. Richard Abbott and his dog "Jocko" became the first official canine team to serve the department.

  • Emergency Support Team

    The Emergency Support Team was created in 1974 to handle highly dangerous and critical incidents facing law enforcement.

  • Marine Services Team

    The Marine Services Team (formerly Underwater Recovery Unit) provides diving expertise in the areas of body recovery, evidence collection and recovery of stolen property.

  • Tactical Bike Team

    Established in 2016, the Tactical Bike Team is specially trained in crowd management and crowd control.

  • Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit

    Traffic Crash Reconstruction has been a part of the Michigan State Police (MSP) since the mid-1970's.
