Salary and Benefits

Recruits are paid while attending the training academy. After graduation, officers receive annual raises and reach a top base salary of over $61,000 after six years. This does not include overtime or shift premiums. Officers work limited weekend shifts. All uniforms and equipment are provided.


  • During training, recruits receive $3,500 a month
  • Starting salary is approximately $45,000, not including overtime and shift premium
  • Through annual step increases, after six years of service an officer's base salary increases to $61,200
  • After six years in service, officer's receive longevity pay; a lump sum provided once a year based on time-in-service

  • Officers earn 13 vacation days in the first calendar year; additional vacation time is accrued based on years in service
  • Officers earn 13 paid sick days in a calendar year
  • 12 paid holidays per year
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave
  • 16 hours of personal leave per year
  • 8 hours of community service leave per year
  • Enrollment in the State of Michigan Defined Contribution Retirement System and option to participate in the state's 401k and/or 457 Deferred Compensation programs
