EAST LANSING, Mich.— Nearly 500 job seekers, students and Michigan employers participated in a career fair at Spartan Stadium on Monday, April 15, for a timely networking opportunity before students leave campus and summer positions go unfilled, helping the state to retain and attract talent to fill 21st-century jobs.
Michigan State University (MSU) Career Services hosted the event to put students and job-seekers in all majors and grade levels, as well as students from other colleges, in touch with internships and full-time career opportunities. The Just-In-Time Career Fair provided various employers with one last touch point to help fill positions before students graduate or move away for the summer. Talent and Economic Development (Ted) Department of Michigan attended the fair to educate students and other job seekers about the vast career opportunities Michigan has to offer.
“We need to fill more than 811,00 high-demand, high-wage jobs in Michigan through 2024,” said Ted Acting Director Stephanie Beckhorn. “Employers are seeking high-skilled talent in a wide variety of fields, and we encourage Michigan students to take advantage of these opportunities and explore the vast career options across our great state. Whether you’re an employer looking for the right talent or a job-seeker looking for the right position, career fairs are a great way to connect and find that perfect match.”
Ted’s Choose Michigan campaign targets science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) students and professionals to highlight the abundant job opportunities, affordable cost of living and vibrant communities the state has to offer to retain and attract talent. The Just-In-Time career fair, and others like it, are another great example of talent attraction and retention efforts that allow employers to showcase their business and hire top talent from colleges and universities to meet the growing needs for skilled talent in Michigan’s workforce.
Companies such as BS&A Software, CareTech Solutions, Dowding Industries, TechSmith Corporation and Technology Resource Group participated in the event to further hiring efforts for full-time and internship positions to fill software developer, manufacturing and automotive engineering and information technology specialists roles.
“With technology and software constantly advancing within the automotive industry, it’s incredibly important that we get ahead of the curve when it comes to recruiting and identifying talent before a candidate has all of the skills needed for a job,” said Sam Ciske, Senior Technical Recruiter for Technology Resource Group. “We attended the career fair to continue building rapport with young professionals to ensure we find the best candidates possible for the jobs of today and tomorrow.”
Retaining talent in the state is a collective effort and MSU is going beyond their career fairs to actively implement innovative tactics to prepare students for career exploration – recently launching their brand new MSU Career Services podcast, and recruiting to hire talent they need to fill positions on campus, including Professional Trades jobs.
“Michigan State’s thousands of staff members keep the university running to support students and faculty,” said Dan Bollman, MSU vice president with MSU’s Infrastructure Planning and Facilities. “We are regularly hiring for high-paying positions, whether in engineering, construction management or the Professional Trades.
“For Professional Trades positions, we often have difficulty finding candidates. We encourage Michigan residents, especially those just entering the job market, to consider a career in the Professional Trades.”
