NOTICE: EGLE has received a Discrimination Complaint regarding the licensing process of US Ecology Detroit North. Updates on this can be found on the Nondiscrimination in EGLE Programs page, under the "Filed Discrimination Complaints" header.
US Ecology operates a hazardous waste storage and treatment facility located at 6520 Georgia Street in Detroit, Michigan. The facility was first established in 1974, before hazardous waste handling and disposal operations were regulated under state or federal law. The facility’s license specifies the hazardous waste activities that US Ecology can perform at the facility. US Ecology Detroit North’s operating license was renewed on January 29, 2020. The federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976, as amended, its rules, and the corresponding state hazardous waste regulations specify how the facility must operate to protect human health and the environment. They also identify the authorities the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Materials Management Division (MMD), has in licensing and overseeing the facility’s hazardous waste operations.
