In November 2019, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson reimplemented a policy at the Department of State that had previously been in place in both Republican and Democratic administrations to make it easier for Michigan residents to update their sex designation on their driver's license or ID.

In November 2021, she expanded the policy to a nonbinary gender marker option for driver's licenses and IDs.

Steps to take

  • Steps
    1. Complete a Sex Designation Form, available online and at any Secretary of State branch office.
    2. Visit a Secretary of State office and bring your current Michigan driver's license or state ID. You are encouraged to schedule your visit for a license or ID correction ahead of time at or by calling 888-SOS-MICH.
    3. Pay the correction fee ($9 for driver's license, $10 for state ID) and take a new picture for your credential. The updated license or state ID will be mailed within 2 to 3 weeks.
