LANSING – The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is seeking public comment, both online and in-person, on proposed K-12 Computer Science (CS) academic standards for Michigan students.

Those who are interested may provide input on Michigan’s proposed new, first-ever CS Standards and their implementation can view the proposed standards and take an online public comment survey at www.michigan.gov/mde-cs available through February 20. They also may attend any of six statewide public information sessions February 2-13, 2019.

“Between the online survey and several public sessions, we’re providing students, parents, teachers, and other Michigan education stakeholders ample opportunity to help shape our state’s academic standards for Computer Science,” said Interim State Superintendent Sheila Alles.

“These proposed standards are one piece of the overall plan to make Michigan a Top 10 education state in 10 years.”

The CS Standards are framed using a grade-band approach for all students through grade 10, plus an additional level of enhanced-study standards for students interested in Computer Science-related careers or college-degree programs.

After the public comment period, the proposed standards go before the State Board of Education for review and consideration for approval. If approved, plans call for the standards to be delivered in a way that they could be taught in all subject areas and grade levels. Implementation support resources include performance tasks and other assessment options.

MDE is collaborating with Computer Science stakeholders and intermediate school districts to share information about the proposed standards.

For questions about the proposed CS Standards’ public comment process, please contact Ann-Marie Mapes, Educational Technology Manager in the Office of Systems, Evaluation, and Technology at 517-335-2775 or mapesa@michigan.gov.
