Deputy Director to Retire After 32 Years with State Police

Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue has announced the retirement of Deputy Director Lt. Col. Gary M. Gorski effective June 1, 2018. Gorski, who served as commander of the Specialized Services Bureau and a member of the department’s Executive Council, is retiring after 32 years of service.

"Lieutenant Colonel Gorski has dedicated his life to serving the residents of Michigan and the members of this department,” said Etue. “He is well-respected as both a leader and a colleague. I wish him and his family the best as he starts the next chapter of his life.”

Gorski joined the department in 1985, graduating as a member of the 99th Trooper Recruit School. During his 32-year career, Gorski has held positions at the Paw Paw, Flat Rock, Coldwater, Rockford and Gaylord posts, as well as within the Training Division. He served as a tactical member of the MSP’s Emergency Support Team from 1987 to 2000. He earned promotion to section commander for the Metropolitan Enforcement Team in Grand Rapids and was later assigned to post commander for the Grand Haven Post.

In 2005, Gorski was promoted to inspector and assistant commander of the First District in Lansing. Later that year, he was promoted to captain and commander of the Sixth District in Grand Rapids where he was responsible for aiding in the administration of eight posts and four multijurisdictional drug task forces in the west Michigan region.

In September 2005, Gorski commanded the Michigan law enforcement contingent that responded to Louisiana’s request for law enforcement services in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

In May 2010, Gorski was promoted to deputy director and selected as commander of the Field Services Bureau overseeing MSP law enforcement operations statewide.

In January 2013, he was selected to command the Specialized Services Bureau, which includes the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division and Intelligence Operations Division.

Gorski holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Public Safety Professions from Siena Heights University and is a graduate of the 204th session of the FBI National Academy. A native of Grand Rapids, he and his wife, Lynn, live in Grand Rapids.
