Trooper of the Year
Tpr. Douglas Baumann of the Houghton Lake Post was named Trooper of the Year.
The Gerstacker Trooper of the Year Award recognizes the MSP trooper or sergeant who symbolizes outstanding professional ethics, dedication to duty and a concern for giving back to their community. The late Dr. Carl A. Gerstacker, former chairman of Dow Chemical Company, created the award in 1961.
Baumann currently serves as a field training officer, voluntary recruiter and background investigator, in addition to his daily duties as a trooper. He is consistently among the highest performers in traffic activity at his post, even with his regular Field Training Officer assignments.
“Trooper Baumann has made it his personal mission to make sure his fellow troopers are as prepared as possible, providing them with realistic tactical and first aid training beyond what is required as part of the Field Training Officer program,” said Colonel Gasper. “His exemplary work performance, extensive community involvement and leadership within his district make him an excellent choice for Trooper of the Year.”
Away from work, Baumann is a well-respected basketball coach.
Baumann enlisted with the MSP in 2008 graduating as a member of the 121st Trooper Recruit School. Prior to serving at the Houghton Lake Post, he has had assignments at the Grand Haven, Kalkaska and Caro posts.
