Tawas Point Lighthouse

Please allow two hours for your visit. Lighthouse tours last approximately 45 minutes. Please allow additional time to visit the Lighthouse Museum Store and the Lighthouse Memory Walkway. When the lighthouse is not open for tours inside, visitors can enjoy its exterior and grounds. There are other historic structures on site, including an oil house and a fog signal area. The park also offers camping, picnicking, hiking, wildlife viewing and a beach.

LIGHTHOUSE TOURS

May 2 - 13: Tours offered Thursday through Monday from noon to 3 p.m.. by donation. 

May 17 - 19: Hourly tours on the half-hour between 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. Regular admission. 

May 20 - 23: Tours Monday and Thursday from noon to 3 p.m., by donation. 

May 24 - Sept. 2

  • Friday, Saturday: Hourly tours on the half-hour between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. No tour at 2:30 p.m. Regular admission.
  • Sunday, Monday, Thursday: Hourly tours on the half-hour between 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. Regular admission. 
  • Tuesday: Open for tours from noon to 4 p.m., by donation. 
  • Wednesday: Lighthouse closed. 

Sept. 5 - Oct. 10:

  • Friday - Sunday: Hourly tours on the half-hour between 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. Regular admission.
  • Monday and Thursday: noon to 3 p.m., by donation.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday: Lighthouse closed. 

Oct. 11: $2 tours from 5 to 9 p.m.

Oct. 12: $2 tours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oct. 13: Tours begin hourly on the half-hour between 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Oct. 14 - 28: Tours offered Thursday through Monday from noon to 3 p.m., by donation.

May 17 - 19: Noon - 6 p.m.

May 24 - Sep. 2: Sunday - Thursday, noon - 6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Sept. 5 - Oct. 10: Friday - Sunday, noon - 6 p.m.

Oct. 11: 2 - 9 p.m.

Oct. 12-13: 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Admission

A Michigan State Parks Recreation Passport is required for entry to the park.

Admission for guided tours of the lighthouse is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 5 to 17; Children ages 4 or younger admitted free.

Tickets are available at the Museum Store. Proceeds help fund the restoration of and exhibits for the lighthouse and lighthouse keeper's quarters.

Tawas Point Lighthouse is located in Tawas Point State Park, off U.S. 23, 2.5 miles southeast of East Tawas.

Free parking is available in the park for vehicles with a Michigan State Parks Recreation Passport.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Personal photography without flash for private use is permitted in the buildings and on the grounds. Photographs may not be published, sold or otherwise distributed for commercial purposes.

Photography for weddings and other special events is allowed in the museum during regular open hours with advance permission. Please contact us in advance to schedule a time. Download our non-commercial photography policy agreement (PDF) for more information.  

Accessibility

The lighthouse is approximately 475 feet from the parking lot; the path is asphalt, then brick. Access to the tower is by 85 steps. Visitors who wish to tour the museum area without going to the top of the tower will encounter a total of seven steps and accompanying handrails.

Information will be made available in Braille, if lighthouse staff is given advance notice.

PETS

Pets accompanied by and under the control of their human friends are welcomed on the grounds of this site. Pets may not enter any building. However, service animals are always welcome. For more information, please see the Department of Natural Resources Pet-Friendly Rules.
