Sidepath Research

  • MDOT undertook this project to investigate bicyclist safety along sidepaths in Michigan. The project included a broad crash analysis of sidepath and sidewalk bicycle crashes, as well as a resident survey to understand perceptions of safety, attitudes toward bicycling, and roadway design preferences among both drivers and bicyclists in Michigan. The results of the survey and crash analysis directed the development of an intersection and crossing treatment guide to assist practitioners in designing sidepaths and improving safety at points of conflict. The results of the research were also summarized in a series of informational sheets designed to help inform drivers and bicyclists about sidepath safety.
