The I-75 modernization project encompasses approximately 18 miles of freeway from M-102 to south of M-59 and has a current daily traffic volume of 103,000 to 174,000. The freeway was built in the 1960s and has not received comprehensive corridor improvements. The need for increased capacity to relieve congestion is driven by the growth along the corridor due to land use changes and the migration of people, services, and industry. It is a critical commercial, commuter, and tourism route moving goods and services daily.
Proposed corridor improvements will ease traffic congestion, meet travel demand for personal mobility and movement of freight, while allowing for future traffic and commercial needs for the entire region. It will also improve motorist safety, reliability, and efficiency. The project is split up into three segments.
Segment 1: Coolidge Highway to South Boulevard, Design-Build Contract
Started in August 2016 and was completed in 2017. Reconstructed 3.3 miles, replaced six structures, and modernized the I-75/Square Lake Road (I-75 Business Loop) interchange.
Segment 2: North of 13 Mile to Coolidge Highway, Design-Build Contract
Started in fall 2018 with substantial completion in fall 2020. Project completion summer 2021. Reconstructed more than 8.5 miles, replaced/repaired 18 structures and built diverging diamond interchanges at Big Beaver and 14 Mile roads.
Segments 1 and 2 will include Michigan’s first High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane which is scheduled to open in fall 2023.
Segment 3: 8 Mile Road to North of 13 Mile Road, Design-Build-Finance-Maintain Contract
Started in winter 2019 with substantial completion expected in fall 2023. This segment will reconstruct 5.5 miles, replace 22 structures, remove 5 bridges and build a four-mile long drainage tunnel in the depressed section of freeway between 8 Mile and 12 Mile roads.
