I-94/Pipestone Road Interchange Reconstruction, Berrien County
Start: December 2019 End: November 2023
What Is Being Done?
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is planning to invest $50 million in I-94 road and bridge work between the St. Joseph River and Britain Avenue in 2022 and 2023. Several proposed adjustments to the Pipestone Road interchange (Exit 29) are provided in the documents below. The most significant proposed change is to route the westbound I-94 exit ramp to the existing Pipestone Road traffic signal at Mall Drive.
Design work starts in December 2019 and will involve examining alternative configurations for the westbound I-94 exit ramp that would maintain access to the Travelodge motel.
A series of stakeholder and other public events will be held to share information and collect input on ramp alternatives. The schedule for these events, including schematics showing major project features, will be added to this page as they become available. Design progress is underway with base plans expected to be available in spring 2020. Ramp closure and detours plans are expected to be available in fall 2020.
How Traffic Will Be Affected:
Extended ramp closures will occur during interchange and bridge reconstruction work. Detour routes and the duration of ramp closures at the Pipestone Road (Exit 29) and Napier Avenue (Exit 30) interchanges will be determined during design. Drivers can expect two lanes of I-94 to be open in each direction during construction.
Realigning the westbound I-94 exit ramp with the Pipestone Road traffic signal at Mall Drive is expected to improve traffic movement in this area, reducing crashes. The addition of an auxiliary lane on eastbound I-94 between Pipestone Road and Napier Avenue is expected to reduce crashes associated with ramp traffic merging onto I-94. Wider bridge shoulders and flatter ramps are also expected to reduce crashes at the interchange.
