In the hope of reaching teens before a pregnancy occurs, the Michigan Department of Human Services' Office of Child Support developed a teaching packet for teens called "The Responsibilities of Parenting - R U Ready?" The materials in the packet were designed to help teens understand the necessary time, energy, and tough decisions that come with parenting. "R U Ready?" emphasizes that a baby is a lifetime commitment and indicates the importance of appropriate timing and parental preparation before having a child. The material encourages teens to consider the realities of parenthood and encourages them to make choices that improve their chances of academic and personal success.
"R U Ready?" was designed for students in grades 9-12, but may be adapted to teens in other community settings.
The "R U Ready?" Teaching Packet includes:
- Cover Letter to School Officials
A letter to introduce "R U Ready?" to School Officials - Information for Parents
An introduction and frequently asked questions for parents of teens - Student's Guide
Five one-hour modules that include group activities, handouts and exercises - Teacher's Guide - Email DHS-OCS-PEP@michigan.gov to request a copy
An overview of the units, answer keys to exercises and ideas for teaching the material - Teacher's PowerPoint Presentation
An overview of the units, which can be used along with the modules in the Student‘s Guide
Additional supplemental material is available in Child Support Forms and Publications.
