State of Michigan Operated Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitals
In accordance with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order 2020-06 (temporary restrictions on entry into health care facilities, residential care facilities, congregate care facilities, and juvenile justice facilities), effective immediately and until further notice, in an effort to maintain the health and safety of our patients and staff, visitors to Michigan state hospitals will not be permitted. Compassionate exceptions may be granted and must be facilitated in coordination with the hospital’s administration.
The state is taking proactive steps to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in Michigan. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in reducing the coronavirus risk to Michigan residents.
The State of Michigan operates five inpatient hospitals for individuals who have severe mental illness or intellectual and developmental disabilities. Caro Center, Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital and Walter Reuther Psychiatric Hospital serve adult patients while children and adolescents are treated at Hawthorn Center. The Center for Forensic Psychiatry provides diagnostic services to the criminal justice system and psychiatric treatment for criminal defendants adjudicated incompetent to stand trial or acquitted by not guilty by reason of insanity.
Michigan’s state hospitals are accredited by The Joint Commission and are committed to providing evidence supported, person centered inpatient care to individuals in an environment that values compassion, collaboration, and community reintegration.
The Office of Recipient Rights (ORR) maintains a dedicated staff at each hospital to protect the rights of our patients. Visit each hospital page to view hospital-specific ORR contact information.
Please note if needed, free language assistance services are available.
The Bureau of Hospitals provides evidence supported, person centered inpatient care to individuals in an environment that values compassion and collaboration with the goal of reintegration into their community.
To be a leader in inpatient psychiatric treatment not only by the improving outcomes of those individuals served by our hospitals but by fostering a culture of engagement, trust, and professional growth among staff.
