Behavior Based Interviews

Interviews may be comprised of a mix of traditional questions and behavioral based questions that focus on your handling of previous work situations. Candidates may wish to respond to behavioral based questions using the STAR format, which stands for “situation or task, action, result.” Using this, you would respond to a question by describing a situation or task, the action you took, and the results of your action.

Behavioral based interview questions may be based on evaluation categories called competencies that are applicable to a particular position group. While the list below was established to assist in performance review evaluations, you may find it helpful in identifying what competencies may be the focus of interview questions. Thinking about and forming responses to questions that demonstrate personal traits and skills consistent with a “High Performing” employee may be of value during the interview process.
