Schoolcraft

Schoolcraft County was first created in 1843 from the counties of Chippewa and Michlimackinac (now Mackinac), but was not considered fully organized until 1871 (1871 PA 373). It is named for Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the U.S. Government. Schoolcraft and his wife, Mary, were noted for their studies of Ojibway culture, as well as translations and retellings of Native American stories and legends.
