Detroit AmeriCorps Mentor Program

Detroit AmeriCorps Mentor Program

Detroit has the highest rate of chronic absenteeism in the country, defined as missing 10% or more per school year. This program will allow two AmeriCorps members per site to implement Direct Service and reach out to families as well as mentor youth who are in Tier II (missing 10-19%). There will also be one Capacity Building Member per Charter District supporting school teams in identifying resources and programs for youth and families. Each Direct Service member will mentor a caseload of 25 youth each (50 students per site). The member will check-in with the mentee daily and call home when a student is absent to identify the reason for absence and depending on the reason, they will connect the family to resources. This is crucial, especially during these times of virtual engagement and ensuring youth are engaged and families are connected to resources and support in the community. Currently, there will be 14 AmeriCorps members supporting 6 Charter school sites in Detroit.
