The following is a personal testimony from MSU College Advising Corps AmeriCorps member Aaron Bagwell.
"The day was finally here; it was the first day of school. I was so nervous and excited at the same time. I walk through the doors of a school that was about double the size of my high school and say hi to some students. The students really didn’t pay much attention to me, so I just walked up the stairs to my office. I gathered my things and tried to log in to my computer, of course this didn’t work. Then somehow a student comes to me and wants to meet with me. I was so scared and barely knew how to speak. I told the student to sit down, and offered her some candy.. I was told this always worked. We start talking and she tells me that she’s on the path to go to college, but she was a first generation college student and didn’t know how to apply. We talked about Match and Fit, and explored all of the options that would best fit her. She ended up applying to more than 3 colleges and we set up her parchment account right then and there. I was so excited that I just met with my first student, and that it actually went well. The weeks go on and the student comes into my office telling me that she was accepted to Montcalm Community College and Saginaw Valley State University. I was so happy for her, and she was so excited to actually get started on the path to success. This moment was when I knew that this job was actually going to be something that I enjoyed doing. Even though the beginning was a little rough, the thought of having multiple students coming to me with that same excitement was something that I will always remember and takeaway from this position."
