Michigan's AmeriCorps Member of the Month

MI AmeriCorps Member of the Month - September 2020: Caitlin Miner, Peckham

Caitlin Miner graduated from Northern Michigan University in Marquette with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. After graduation, Caitlin decided to commit to a year of full-time service through AmeriCorps and found the Economic Opportunity Coaching Corps program to be an excellent fit.

The Economic Opportunity Coaching Corps, administered by Peckham, Inc., utilizes AmeriCorps members to coach people with disabilities, refugees, and low-income individuals in the areas of financial literacy, adult education, employability skill development, and tax preparation to help them achieve and maintain economic stability.

Caitlin’s service has allowed her to build upon and expand her work skills, while combining her knowledge with her values and passion for advocacy and community economic development. She is placed at Peckham, Inc.’s main building location in Lansing.

“As Caitlin approaches the end of her service year in October, it affords me the opportunity to reflect upon her year of service and recognize her accomplishments,” stated AmeriCorps program director James Madaski. “Caitlin is direct, capable, creative, and compassionate. Not only has she helped coach more than 230 Peckham Team Members/clients on financial literacy and employability skills topics, but she went above and beyond during the initial COVID-19 lockdown in the State of Michigan, to stay engaged with our clients remotely and help them navigate the sometimes complicated MiWAM system to apply for critical unemployment benefits. Caitlin was able to assist these team members during a difficult and uncertain time and get them the assistance they needed most to help them stay financially solvent.”

As she moves forward, Caitlin hopes to continue doing work in the human services field, possibly with youth, in a position that allows her to continue to grow and learn and matches her values.
