Labor and Economic Opportunity
RELEASE DATE: Tuesday, September 24, 2019
DETROIT, Mich.-- The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is partnering with LinkedIn on a program meant to make it easier for people receiving unemployment benefits to apply for jobs and track those applications.
By using linkedin.com/unemployment, claimants can use their current account or sign up for a free LinkedIn account to search and apply for jobs from among LinkedIn’s more than 20 million job listings. The LinkedIn unemployment portal will automatically create a work search log that claimants can submit to UIA to document their work search. In Michigan, claimants are required to search for work with at least two employers per week and submit a record of their work search.
Other features include job application reminder notifications and free LinkedIn learning courses such as “Recovering from a Layoff” and "Mastering Common Interview Questions," and opportunities to interact with experts and other members for advice and recommendations while they search for their next job. This effort is a six-month pilot and is also being launched in Ohio and Arizona.
“The LinkedIn unemployment portal serves as an additional tool for reemployment resources along with Pure Michigan Talent Connect,” said Steve Gray, director of the Unemployment Insurance Agency. “It will provide a helpful and convenient way for claimants to search for and submit their work search activity.”
More than 200,000 Michiganders apply for unemployment benefits annually. To remain eligible, claimants must be able to work, be available for work and be actively looking for work. Claimants must register for work by visiting a Michigan Works! office in person and creating a profile on the state’s job portal, Pure Michigan Talent Connect.
“LinkedIn’s vision is to create economic opportunity for every member of the workforce. Through this partnership, we’ve created tools and made available resources to help ensure unemployed Michiganders maintain their unemployment benefits while they look for the right job on LinkedIn," said Lakshman Somasundaram, a product manager at LinkedIn.
