Effective on Monday, March 16, 2020, the Corporations, Securities & Commercial Licensing Bureau will be closed to public visitors and walk-in customers until further notice.
On May 4th, 2020, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) issued a Public Health Epidemic Order, which has been posted on the State of Michigan Coronavirus website. This order allows for medical examiners and funeral directors to efficiently handle final disposition of a decedent and addresses issues regarding storage capacity during the COVID-19 state of emergency.
The order also allows Mortuary Science licensees who have a lapsed license within 5 years will be permitted to apply for a temporary license, and active licensees from other states will be permitted to apply for a temporary license to practice in Michigan during the time that this order is effective. Michigan Mortuary Science resident trainees will also be permitted to renew their license for a third time.
In addition, DHHS has issued guidance on maintaining good documentation and record keeping related to final disposition. It also includes a section on alternate storage options to ensure that decedents are stored in a respectful and appropriate manner.

If a fee is required, the application will need to be completed and submitted with a check or money order and any additional documentation required, via US Mail to State of Michigan, LARA/CSCL, Mortuary Science, PO Box 30018, Lansing MI 48909 or via overnight mail delivery to State of Michigan, LARA/CSCL, Mortuary Science, State of Michigan, 2407 N. Grand River Ave, Lansing, MI 48906.
