WHEREAS, the safety of farm and other agricultural workers is of the utmost importance; and,
WHEREAS, grain production, handling and transportation is a significant part of the agricultural industry; and,
WHEREAS, in the case of grain elevator workers, it takes only seconds to be completely trapped in flowing grain or overcome in oxygen deficient situations; and,
WHEREAS, through education and awareness of hazards and safe work practices and procedures, industry leaders hope to reduce the number of preventable injuries and deaths associated with grain handling and storage; and,
WHEREAS, Grain Bin Safety Week is an annual observance which promotes grain bin safety on farms and commercial grain-handling facilities; and,
WHEREAS, during this week we join with Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, KC Supply Co. Inc., the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety, Specialty Risk Insurance, KFSA Insurance Agency, Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., Agri-Business Insurance Services, The Scoular Company, West Side Salvage, Inc. and Nohr Wortmann Engineering in creating awareness of grain bin safety;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 18-24, 2018 as Grain Bin Safety Week in Michigan.
