WHEREAS, inflammatory breast cancer is the most aggressive form of breast cancer and is characterized by having very low survival rates. It accounts for five to ten percent of all diagnosed breast cancers; and,
WHEREAS, fifty percent of inflammatory breast cancer cases are fatal within five years and almost all within ten years; and,
WHEREAS, rapid and accurate diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer is difficult due to the limited amount of pre-treatment tumor tissue available for examination; and,
WHEREAS, lack of research of inflammatory breast cancer has hampered advancements in early detection, treatment and improved prognoses in patients not only for this cancer but for all other forms of metastasizing cancers as well; and,
WHEREAS, to stay healthy, Michigan women need to find out how they can maximize inflammatory breast cancer management by knowing their risk, understanding treatment options and recognizing the need for increased research;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2-9, 2016 as Inflammatory Breast Cancer Awareness Week in Michigan.
