WHEREAS, the success of our state and nation has always been the product of our unique ability to welcome the contributions and spirit of entrepreneurship of all people, regardless of race, gender, creed or country of origin; and,
WHEREAS, immigrants create jobs and contribute economically and culturally to Michigan's greatness, making up approximately six percent of Michigan's population; and,
WHEREAS, as we work to grow Michigan, we must create welcoming communities that attract, build and retain a diverse workforce, capitalizing on diverse perspectives, cultures and talents for knowledge, creativity and innovation to thrive; and,
WHEREAS, we value inclusion and diversity, with citizens and civic leaders working together to ensure our immigrant and refugee neighbors are seamlessly integrated into our neighborhoods, communities and cities; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we join with “Welcoming Michigan” and its partners to encourage citizens of the Great Lakes State to recognize the importance of working together in order to create and support an economically strong and culturally vibrant state for all Michiganders, for years to come;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 16-25, 2016 as Welcoming Week in Michigan.
