WHEREAS, 7.6 Million animals enter shelters each year and 2.7 million shelter animals are euthanized each year; and,
WHEREAS, only 35% of dogs and 37% of cats in shelters get adopted; and,
WHEREAS, only 29% of all owned dogs and cats are adopted from shelters; and,
WHEREAS, adoption, contrary to popular misinformation, can help people find an inexpensive and loving companion and help animals find a much needed home; and,
WHEREAS, there is a need to increase public awareness about the need for pet adoption and to encourage all people to consider getting their next best friend and companion through adoption;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 8, 2016 as Pet Adoption Awareness Day in Michigan.
