WHEREAS, Syringomyelia, a disease that causes cysts to form inside the spinal cord resulting in damage to the spinal cord and spinal nerves, has no cure at this time despite its discovery in 1803; and,
WHEREAS, men, women and children all over the world have been plagued by the widespread symptoms associated with Syringomyelia; and,
WHEREAS, there is currently no universal treatment protocol for patients with this disease and there is a lack of knowledge of it in the public and medical communities even though it was identified over 200 years ago; and,
WHEREAS, widespread awareness and understanding of Syringomyelia is critical for meaningful research to continue;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2016 as Syringomyelia Awareness Month in Michigan.
