WHEREAS, the arts are an essential part of the fabric of our nation’s history and culture; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to numerous nationally and internationally renowned artists, largely due to the arts education and opportunities they were given as young people in our state; and,
WHEREAS, inclusion of the arts in education improves youth development and increases overall educational performance, preparing a more innovative workforce for the future; and,
WHEREAS, a universal language, the arts engage creativity and help open the minds of students in ways other subjects in a traditional classroom cannot; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Youth Arts Association to recognize Michigan’s exceptionally talented students in the arts, and to raise awareness of the vital role arts play in the lives of Michigan’s youth;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 12-14, 2016 as Michigan Youth Arts Week.
