WHEREAS, Michigan's excellent vineyards and wineries are a key component of our state’s tourism and agricultural industries; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s reputation as a quality wine producing region of the United States is growing as evidenced by over 500 awards earned by 30 producers of Michigan wine in 20 prestigious national competitions in 2015; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan wine production has more than doubled over the past 10 years, with more than 2 million gallons of wine bottled in 2015; and,
WHEREAS, the state’s grape-growing industry dates back to the mid-19th century and has grown to include 2,900 acres of wine grapes and 120 wineries that welcome more than 2 million visitors throughout the year; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan vintners cultivate a wide variety of grapes, which allows them to produce a diverse selection of quality wines including reds, whites and blushes as well as sparkling and non-alcoholic juices; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we join with Michigan vintners in support of the “wine in moderation” concept and encourage adult residents and tourists in Michigan to visit the wineries of our great state and enjoy a glass of Pure Michigan-made wine;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2016 as Wine Month in Michigan.
