WHEREAS, more than 150 million individual and 11 million business income tax returns are filed every year, and over 82 million returns are prepared by tax professionals; and,
WHEREAS, tax refund fraud is expected to hit $21 billion by 2016, and tax evasion in the United States exceeds $300 billion each year; and,
WHEREAS, the vast majority of tax fraud perpetrated by paid tax professionals is done by tax professionals who are not tax attorneys, certified public accountants, or enrolled agents; and,
WHEREAS, enrolled agents are the only federally licensed tax professionals whose credentials rely exclusively on a knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service to assist in resolving tax issues;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 1, 2016 as Enrolled Agent Day in Michigan.
