WHEREAS, telephones play a critical role during emergencies and remain a vital link to government services, community resources, friends and family, yet many individuals and families in our state are unable to afford the cost of a home telephone; and,
WHEREAS, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Michigan Public Service Commission have joined efforts to offer the Lifeline Assistance program, which makes local telephone service more affordable for Michigan’s low-income consumers by providing a discount on monthly charges; and,
WHEREAS, additionally, the FCC established enhanced Link-Up and Lifeline programs for tribal lands; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Public Service Commission to raise awareness of the Lifeline Assistance program to citizens throughout the state, and we encourage all eligible customers to take the steps to signing up; for more information, citizens may call the Michigan Public Service Commission at 1-800-292-9555;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Monday, September 8 through Sunday, September 14, 2014 as Michigan Lifeline Awareness Week.
