June, 2014: Turn Michigan Purple for Alzheimer's Disease Awareness

WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder, tragically robs individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and physical impairments; and,

WHEREAS, According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death for older adults; and

WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s disease affects not only patients, but also their families, friends, and communities. Those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease require additional care, often provided by loved ones; and

WHEREAS, While there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, there is help for families, friends, and patients in the form of education, support, and services available statewide; and

WHEREAS, Michigan residents are encouraged to tweet, post and share their stories and images using the #puremipurple hashtag on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, hereby proclaim June, 2014 as a month to Turn Michigan Purple for Alzheimer's Disease Awareness.
