WHEREAS, with turkey being a healthy protein source that is very low in fat and provides many beneficial nutrients in building a strong immune system, consumer demand drove Michigan to produce 5.1 million turkeys in 2013; and
WHEREAS, Michigan produced more than 200 million pounds of turkey in 2013 to place among other leading states as the fifteenth largest producer of turkeys in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Michigan turkey producing industry employs 800 people among 47 family farms managed by 16 owners joined to form a cooperative, Michigan Turkey Producers; and
WHEREAS, Michigan Turkey Producers are a significant supplier to the food service industry which supplies many local restaurants and the retail deli case with value added turkey products; and
WHEREAS, with the increased production of turkey, the turkey industry has contributed more than $100 million of agriculture economic impact; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June, 2014 as Michigan Turkey Month.
