WHEREAS, each year, arson and suspicious fires represent a great percentage of all fires, and many injuries and deaths are the result of arson in Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, arson is a serious crime that embodies devastation and destruction, causing severe damage to buildings and neighborhoods, and endangers the lives of innocent people; and,
WHEREAS, arson costs Michigan taxpayers millions of dollars annually, and according to the U.S. Fire Administration, arson costs our nation an estimated one billion dollars in direct property losses each year; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services and Michigan Arson Prevention Committee to encourage citizens of Michigan to recognize the costly consequences of arson, and to work together to prevent arson in their neighborhoods and communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, May 4 through Saturday, May 10, 2014 as Arson Awareness Week in Michigan.
