February 8, 2014: Dexter Gordon Day

WHEREAS, Jazz music, which began in the United States, has had a positive impact on American culture; and,

WHEREAS, The 2014 University of Michigan Jazz Festival, which attracts the finest high school and collegiate students in the State of Michigan and the surrounding states to the University of Michigan, offers the opportunity to celebrate, during Black History Month, the memory and contributions of a great American artist, Dexter Gordon, with a live concert by the University of Michigan Jazz Faculty and Jimmy Heath; and,

WHEREAS, The University of Michigan, through the Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation, has a unique relationship with the world of jazz; and,

WHEREAS, The University of Michigan, Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation has communicated this legacy to students throughout the State of Michigan;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Saturday, February 8, 2014 as Dexter Gordon Day in Michigan.
