January 9, 2014: Phi Beta Sigma Day

WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University by Hon. A. Langston Taylor, Hon. Leonard F. Morse, and Hon. Charles I. Brown on January 9, 1914;

WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma has Alumni and Collegiate chapters in every state within the United States, The Virgin Islands, The Bahamas, Germany, Korea and The Continent of Africa;

WHEREAS, renown Sigma Men include George Washington Carver, A. Phillip Randolph , James Weldon Johnson, Congressman John Lewis, President William Clinton, L.C. Greenwood, Emmitt Smith, Lou Brock, Rev. Al Sharpton, Les Brown, Mayor Harold Washington and Alain Leroy Locke to name a few;

WHEREAS, their three International Programs are in the area of Bigger & Better Business, Social Action and Education;

WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma has parented with the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, St. Jude's Hospital, the VITA Tax Program and the National Institute of Health;

WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma was the leading organization in the fight against hazing when it launched its National Anti-Hazing Campaign in 2012 with a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Followed by a symposium and Anti-Hazing Video & workshop;

WHEREAS, Sigma has been involved in the social conscious of the nation by hosting its youth mentoring program , The Sigma Beta Clubs, holding Sleep Outs for the Homeless, housing the Million Man March, sponsoring the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and sponsoring the 50th Anniversary of The March on Washington;

WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is headquartered in Washington, D.C. And is lead by it’s 34th International President, The Honorable Jonathan A. Mason, Sr.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Thursday, January 9, 2014 as Phi Beta Sigma Day in Michigan.
