October 6 - 12, 2013: Fire Prevention Week

WHEREAS, last year, home fires killed more than 58 Michigan citizens, and according to the National Fire Incident Reporting System, fire departments throughout the state responded to nearly 11,256 home fires in 2012; and,

WHEREAS, unattended cooking and risky kitchen habits are the leading cause of home fires, and a significant contributor to home fire deaths with two of every five home fires starting in the kitchen; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan’s first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and Michigan citizens are responsive to public education measures and take personal steps to increase their safety from fire in their homes; and

WHEREAS, during this week, we raise awareness of fire prevention throughout the state of Michigan; we encourage individuals and families to practice fire safety in their kitchens; develop and practice home fire escape plans, and ensure homes are equipped with working smoke alarms or automatic fire sprinkler systems for additional preparedness;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan do hereby proclaim, Sunday, October 6 through Saturday, October 12, 2013, as Fire Prevention Week in Michigan.
