June 10 through June 15, 2013: Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Awareness Day and Week

WHEREAS, the safety and protection of elder and vulnerable adults is critical to the well-being of Michigan communities; and,

 

WHEREAS, it is estimated that 90,000 Michigan residents age 60 and older are victims of abuse; abuse of elder and vulnerable adults is a tragedy and an ever-increasing problem that crosses all socio-economic boundaries; and,

 

WHEREAS, all Michigan residents should watch for signs of abuse, such as physical trauma, withdrawal, depression, anxiety and fear of family members, friends or caregivers; efforts to identify, report and investigate elder mistreatment are important in reducing the harm to elder and vulnerable adults; and,

 

WHEREAS, Michigan's elder and vulnerable adults are valued members of society, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure they live safely, with dignity and as independently as possible, with the supports they may need; and,

    

WHEREAS, on this day and during this week, we join with the Michigan Department of Human Services and Office of Services to the Aging to raise awareness of elder and vulnerable adult abuse in Michigan; we urge Michiganders to learn more about the signs of abuse in an effort to protect those in need and decrease abuse occurrences in our state;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Saturday, June 15, 2013 and the week of June 10, 2013 as Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Awareness Day and Week in Michigan.
