May 6 through May 10, 2013: Senior Corps Week

WHEREAS, for more than four decades, Senior Corps and its three programs, Foster Grandparents, Retired and Senior Volunteers and Senior Companions, have proven to be a highly effective way to engage citizens age 55 and older in meeting community, state and national needs; and,

 

WHEREAS, each year, Senior Corps provides opportunities for nearly 330,000 older Americans throughout the nation, including about 12,000 volunteers who serve in Michigan communities; and,   

 

WHEREAS, last year, Michigan Senior Corps volunteers provided more than 2.1 million hours of service, helping to improve the lives of our most vulnerable citizens, strengthen our educational system, protect our environment, provide independent living services and contribute to our public safety; and,  

 

WHEREAS, service by older Americans helps volunteers by keeping them active, healthy and engaged; at a time of mounting social needs and growing interest in service by older Americans, there is an unprecedented opportunity to address community challenges by harnessing the talents of those volunteers 55 years of age and older; and,

 

WHEREAS, during this week, we acknowledge and thank Senior Corps volunteers for their service, and recognize their positive impact, countless contributions and great value to our communities and nation;

 

NOW THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10, 2013 as Senior Corps Week in Michigan.
