May 2013: Michigan Beef Month

WHEREAS, 1.12 million cattle and calves are raised in Michigan, in nearly every county on about 12,000 farming operations; and,

 

WHEREAS, Michigan cattle farmers are working to conserve the soil and making optimum use of natural resources; they invest $1 per-head through the beef checkoff program, which supports beef research, education and promotion to assure Michigan consumers are enjoying the safest, most nutritious beef available; and,

 

WHEREAS, cash receipts from cattle and calves in Michigan total more than $380 million annually; and,

 

WHEREAS, scientific research continues to document the role that lean beef plays in lowering cholesterol, building muscles and cognitive health and providing protein, iron, zinc, B-vitamins and other essential nutrients which benefit people of all ages; and,

 

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in encouraging Michiganders to learn more about nutritional facts, educational materials, recipes and beef industry facts by visiting the Michigan Beef Industry Commission at www.mibeef.org;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2013 as Michigan Beef Month.
