WHEREAS, "Leave A Legacy" is a public awareness effort that aims to "make a difference in the lives that follow" by encouraging citizens to make planned charitable contributions through their will or estate; and,
WHEREAS, all adults, regardless of family wealth or circumstances, are encouraged to have a will, the starting point of an effective estate plan; and,
WHEREAS, nonprofit organizations provide excellent and essential services in many areas of our lives, including religion, education, healthcare, research, the arts and social services for those in need; and,
WHEREAS, charitable giving through bequests in a will provides each of us the opportunity to support and perpetuate for future generations those values and ideals most important to us and our families that we cherished during our lifetimes; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we join with various Michigan nonprofit organizations and community leaders in encouraging Michiganders to recognize the value of leaving a legacy through wills as vital support of nonprofit and philanthropic organizations in the very important work they do;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2013 as Leave a Legacy Month in Michigan.
