April 21 through April 27, 2013: Volunteer Week

WHEREAS, for 176 years, Michigan has been a state of innovative, giving and caring people; and,

 

WHEREAS, more than 2 million Michiganders of all ages volunteer their time each year, including more than 42,000 individuals who meet community needs through national service; and,

 

WHEREAS, the full spectrum of volunteers and national service members are important to improving our communities and ensuring our quality of life; and,

 

WHEREAS, volunteer and service opportunities are accessible through AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs, local schools, college campuses, volunteer centers, mentoring organizations and various non-profits; and,

 

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Community Service Commission to raise awareness of and celebrate the impact and importance of volunteers in Michigan and throughout our nation; we encourage residents of the Great Lakes State to dedicate some time to their community or to volunteer with their favorite organization in the great effort to build innovative solutions to local challenges; 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, April 21 through Saturday, April 27, 2013 as Volunteer Week in Michigan.
