April 2013: Blindness Prevention and Services Month

WHEREAS, more than 25 million Americans report experiencing significant vision loss, including approximately 6.5 million seniors age 65 and older; and,

 

WHEREAS, blindness may occur suddenly or over a period of time, and the leading causes for blindness in the United States include diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration; and,

   

WHEREAS, eye doctors and agencies throughout Michigan provide support groups and programs that educate communities about vision loss and blindness prevention, and offer services to help visually impaired and blind individuals to live independently and productively; and, 

 

WHEREAS, during this month, we encourage all Michiganders to have a routine eye examination, which is key for early diagnosis and treatment, and prevention of vision loss and blindness from sight-threatening diseases;  

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2013 as Blindness Prevention and Services Month in Michigan.
