WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, and throughout our nation's history, citizens have stepped up to meet challenges by volunteering within their communities; and,
WHEREAS, since its creation in 1994, the AmeriCorps national service program has proven to be a highly effective way to engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in meeting a wide range of community needs and promoting the importance of service and volunteering; and,
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps has strengthened America's independent sector by investing more than $7.2 billion dollars to support the efforts of tens of thousands of nonprofit, community, educational and faith-based community groups nationwide; those grants have leveraged hundreds of millions of additional funds and in-kind donations from other sources; and,
WHEREAS, more than 24,000 Michigan residents have served as AmeriCorps members, including AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps National and AmeriCorps NCCC, providing our state with an excess of 29 million hours of service; each year, AmeriCorps provides opportunities for an additional 80,000 citizens across the nation to give back, including nearly 1,800 from Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members throughout Michigan have, in return for their service, earned more than $73 million in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards to further their own educational advancement at colleges and universities; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Community Service Commission to recognize the many contributions of AmeriCorps members and thank them for their dedication and service to communities throughout our state and nation;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Saturday, March 9 through Sunday, March 17, 2013 as AmeriCorps Week in Michigan.
