- Registration for Modern Physics Workshop at Wayne State University

- ACTION BIOSCIENCE
- The American Institute of Biological Sciences hosts Actionbioscience.org, a Web site that promotes bioscience education and literacy. Features include teacher-written lesson plans and peer-reviewed articles that focus on important current issues in areas such as biodiversity, the environment, genomics, biotechnology, and evolution. Select articles are translated into Spanish, suitable for ESL students. See why Scientific American named Actionbioscience.org one of the top five biology websites.
- Climate Science Activity Book
Discover Your Changing World with NOAA introduces middle and high school students to the principles of climate science and the factors involved in climate change. Students explore climate science concepts as they make a solar cooker, set up a home weather station, construct an electronic temperature sensor, create a unique message about climate change, and play the “Are You Climate Literate?” board game. Each activity includes detailed instructions and illustrations.
- Education Programs at EarthWatch Institute
Find out how to join teams of conservation researchers around the world on expeditions from 1-3 weeks long. Also discover lesson plans and web sites developed by past teacher volunteers while they were in the field. Funding is available for students (16+) and educators.
- Exploring Climate Change Impacts
- This is a new curriculum guide, now available from the Union of Concerned scientists (UCS). It contains a set of teaching materials geared towards students and teachers in grades 9-12. Individual exercises are adaptable to different grade levels and engage students in an exploration of the impacts of global climate change on ecosystems and natural resources.
- First Measured Century: The History and Use of Sampling Methods
This lesson for high school students examines statistical sampling by tracing improvements in sampling procedures over the 20th century and by taking a critical look at scientific inquiries involving flawed sampling.
- Henry Ford Learning Institute
The Henry Ford Institute is launching a learning national network of small high schools modeled after the Henry Ford Academy in Dearborn, Michigan. This network of community-based high schools will provide under-served students in urban areas with quality, real-world learning environments, a college-preparatory culture, and demanding academic standards. The first school, The Henry Ford Academy: Power House High, will open in Chicago in 2008. Located in the former Sears Roebuck building, the school's "green" features will be used to enhance lessons on the environment, clean technologies, and sustainability.
- Hurricanes: Science and Society
Hurricanescience.org is a great resource for information about the science of hurricanes and how to lessen their impacts. Major sections include Hurricane Science, Hurricanes and Society, and Hurricane History. It also offers peer reviewed science content, case studies, and an interactive history timeline. - Launch and Propulsion Educators Guide for Grades 6-12
The fifteen lesson plans in this guide help students learn about the science of rockets, principles of rocketry and the laws of motion. Student texts are included so that students may read about variables, forces and motion, and NASA's history and future. Students learn which variables affect the performance of a rocket. In the assessment, students engage in a competition wherein they apply what they have learned about rockets to build a launch vehicle that flies as high as possible.
- Marine Fisheries Series Activities Guide
An online activity guide geared for middle to high school students. It is a guide created by the Marine Fisheries Series project to help students dive deeper into the topics covered in the documentary series. The guide includes six engaging, peer-reviewed activities, correlated to national science and social studies education standards. These activities work well in classrooms as well as non-traditional educational settings such as nature or science centers, aquariums and zoos.
- Michigan Green Chemistry Clearinghouse
The overall goal of the Michigan Green Chemistry Clearinghouse is to accelerate green chemistry awareness, innovation and investment in the state of Michigan by creating and enabling a community of green chemistry advocates that are connected and informed. The Clearinghouse aims to be dynamic and interactive on-line source of information, resources, databases, learning opportunities and interactive tools for citizens, educators and other professionals. - Michigan Radio Climate Change Broadcasting
The Environment Report from Michigan Radio is broadcasting a series on Climate Change. This audio series explains how fish in the Great Lakes are affected by warming water and shorter winters which are contributed to Climate change. The impacts faced by sport fishermen and commercial fishing industries will also be discussed. This Web site is a one-stop shop for NASA Science and the educational resources created by NASA and its partners. Most appropriate for middle and high school students and teachers, the site offers resources in five categories: NASA Science, Be a Scientist, Get Involved, Games and Activities, and Multimedia. Each category spans several science disciplines. For example, in NASA Science, physics-oriented visitors can tour the electromagnetic spectrum or watch a video on planetary dynamics, while Earth science-minded visitors can explore tropical twisters or follow NASA weather satellites in real time.
- National Science Foundation Chem Links
This is National Science Foundation (NSF) college student resource for years one and two of chemistry. Features 2-4 week modules with real-world questions (What Should We Do About Global Warming?) and develops the chemistry needed to answer them. Developed and tested by faculty from 40 two- and four-year colleges and universities, the modules can be adapted for use in a variety of non-science courses.
- NAVY STEM for the classroom
Through the Navy's innovative science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) resources, high school students can learn different lessons such as Jets in Flight, The Science of Diving, Future Fleet, and Oceanography and Meteorology and learn how these lessons pertain to different STEM principles.
- Pathfinder Science Ozone Project
Each fall students from all over the country participate in the Pathfinder Science research area, exploring ground-level ozone. Ozone is a toxic gas, which is formed by a reaction between air pollutants and sunlight. This research area is design for upper elementary through high school age students with two easy to follow, network-wide, standardized protocols are offered.
- PBS Borders Environmental Project
Through the Point-of-View (POV) Borders Environmental project, PBS offers lesson plans for K-12 teachers that are designed to enhance online story telling and sharing. Each separate lesson plan focuses on earth, water or air, and is downloadable in pdf or html format. Students can explore how human activity and industrialization is altering air quality, the social impact of land use and how water is used in their own communities.
- Science Off the Sphere Video Series - NASA and the American Physical Society (APS) have entered into a partnership to share unique videos from the International Space Station with students, educators and science fans around the world. NASA astronaut Don Pettit will use everyday objects from Earth to demonstrate physics through the "Science off the Sphere" video series, available on the APS's outreach website, Physics Central. Also featured will be educational content on the physics topics demonstrated in space by Pettit in order to challenge the viewers on a physics issue. The segments of "Science off the Sphere" will end with a question for the viewers. APS will review the responses and identify a winner. Pettit will recognize the winner in a future installment. - Science Olympiad teams up with TV Show "Fringe"
Fox and Science Olympiad have partnered to create lesson plans for grades 9-12. The lessons have elements from both the science of the television series and Science Olympiad events, like Disease Detectives or Dynamic Planet. They can be downloaded for free and added to curriculum, given as projects or formatted as brain teasers. They provide many resources for teachers like learning objectives, hands-on activities, discussion suggestions, relevant episode scenes, online resources, and National Science Standards Alignment. - Ten80 Student Racing Challenge
The Ten80 Student Racing Challenge features an integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curriculum for students in grades 6-12. Student teams work collaboratively to design, build, and race model remote-controlled cars against those of other student teams across the country. The curriculum teaches students about aerodynamic design, chassis setup, mechanical engineering, and math modeling (collecting data and making graphs).
