Hartwick Pines State Park, located just northeast of Grayling, is seeking volunteer hosts for the newly reopened Memorial Building this summer. Participating hosts will have the privilege of camping for free at Hartwick Pines State Park campground, and presenting programs and leading tours at the historic Memorial Building. The host schedule is designed to allow time to enjoy recreational activities on your own while providing valuable volunteer services.
The Memorial Building
The Memorial Building is a popular landmark in the park. The rustic, lodge-style building was completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and served as the park’s visitor center until 1994. Visitors to the building include generational visitors with fond memories of the park, and architecture and history lovers.
About the host program
This year's program will take place May 25-Oct. 30, 2021. Hosts are required to participate a minimum of one week and a maximum of one month.
Hosts serve singly or in teams and can be made up of family members or friends. Hosts are given the opportunity to camp for free at site 2 in the Hartwick Pines State Park campground, which has electrical hookups and can fit tents, campers and RVs up to 40 feet. If utilizing the free camping, you must adhere to campsite policies. Hosts must leave pets at home unless a member of your team will remain at the campsite, as pets are not allowed in the Memorial Building and cannot be left unattended at the campsite.
Duties include greeting visitors, helping special guests with program set up (i.e.: yoga teacher), and offering tours and providing information about the building and the park to visitors Thursday through Monday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (building will be closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). You may be asked to also host programs outside those hours.
In addition to providing an informative and educational experience, hosts will perform basic facility maintenance such as sweeping and dusting. If able, you will be asked to lead programs or activities based on your skill set (i.e. a sketching workshop or photography session). You will also be asked to sell merchandise on behalf of the Friends of Hartwick Pines State Park.
Hosts should be comfortable speaking to the public, in good health, and able to climb a staircase to the second story as a regular part of duties. People with excellent customer service and tour guide skills are especially encouraged to apply. An optional (but highly recommended) day-long training for selected hosts will take place Saturday, May 1. Each host will also receive a brief orientation upon arrival.
- Must be 18 or older and provide your own camping equipment, food and other personal items.
- Ability to work at least five days a week, including weekends and holidays (totaling 30 hours per week).
