There are eight housing units. One is a 252-bed unit for Level I prisoners and is home to a leader dog program.  There are seven level V units inside the secure perimeter of the facility.  Four are designated as General Population units and three serve as Administrative Segregation. Capacity for the level V portion of the facility is 616 prisoners. Other buildings house food service, healthcare, prisoner services, maintenance, warehouse and administration. 


Education programs include Adult Basic Education, General Education Development, Employment Readiness and a variety of intuitive courses that are tablet based. Treatment services include, counseling, substance-abuse services, psychotherapy, religious activities, Thinking For a Change, Batterers Intervention, and violence prevention programs.  Leisure time activities consist of general library, law library, gym and weights. Prisoners are provided on-site routine medical and dental care. Serious and emergency problems are treated via local community providers, the Brooks Medical Center at Marquette Branch Prison and at the Duane L. Waters Health Care in Jackson.


Double chain-link fences, interior non-lethal electronic stun fence, electronic and microwave detection system, razor-ribbon wire, camera monitoring and an alert response patrol vehicle make up the perimeter security.

Visitation hours:

Level V -Administrative Segregation:

Thursday through Monday        8:30 am - 10:30 am

Level V -General Population:

Thursday through Monday        10:30 am - 2:30 pm

Level I - General Population:

Thursday through Monday        4:00 pm - 8:30 pm


Visitor processing:     

  • Visitors should park in the designated area adjacent to the Michigan State Police vehicles. 
  • If the information desk officer is not present, there is a doorbell located on the front side of the information desk that can be used to alert staff upon arrival. 
  • Visitors may arrive up to 30 minutes prior to the visiting hours but will not be processed until visiting hours begin.  Visitors may use this time to use the restrooms, vending machines, & store their personal items in the visitor locker.  Note: Items purchased from vending machine are not permitted in the restrooms. 
  • A quarter ($.25) will be needed as a deposit to use the visitor locker (top row with the green "VISITOR" label) to store personal items such as a jacket, purse, wallet or car keys. 
  • For Level I visits, the vending machines (located in the lobby) are to be used for the purchase of snacks and beverages; prices vary.  Vending machines accept coins and paper money.  They do not accept cards.
  • Photo tickets are available in the vending machine for $2.00 per photo.  These photos may be taken home by the visitor or remain with the prisoner.  Prisoners may also purchase photo tickets through the prisoner store, these receipts may be brought to the visiting room on visits.
  • Adult visitors shall be required to present a valid pictured driver's license, state identification card, military identification card, passport, or other government issued identification. Minors shall be required to provide an original birth certificate.  Identification verification is required prior to each visit.
  • Visitors must be fully dressed in clean clothes that are in good repair, e.g., holes in the clothing is not acceptable.
  • Cell phones, tobacco, cameras, and other recording devices are not allowed inside the correctional facility and should remain secured in your locked vehicle.  Please review visitor rules for an itemized list of non-allowable items. 
  • Additional visitor information can be obtained by viewing the visitor monitor located in the facility lobby.   
  • All visits must be processed no later than 60 minutes prior to the end of visiting hours
