Never give out your personal information to someone claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service.
If in doubt, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.
Don’t send money to someone claiming to be from the IRS. That’s a scam. The IRS will not request personal information over the phone, require an immediate payment using a specific method of payment such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer, or threaten you with local police, immigration officers or other law enforcement. They will first mail a bill to a taxpayer that owes taxes and allow for opportunities to question or appeal the amount.
If you’ve received this kind of robocall or have fallen for an IRS scam, file a complaint with our office; the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration; the Federal Trade Commission; or call toll-free, 877-FTC-HELP (877-382-4357).
